Car Park

Long-stay parking is available on site at £7.00 per day. Free disabled parking.

For a quick, convenient route to the city centre you can catch the Road Train straight from the Museum's door to Duncombe Place (next to York Minster). Trips leave the Museum on the hour and half hour from 11.00 to 16.00 and depart from Duncombe Place every 30mins from 11.15 to 16.15. Our 2008 service is scheduled to run from: 9 to 24 February and 21 March to 2 November.

Dogs

Dogs are not admitted except for support dogs for blind and deaf people.


Facilities for Visitors with Disabilities

Ramps and chair lifts provide access to most of the Museum. The recent instalment of automatic doors to the entrances and a lift to the balcony gallery has made further improvements to access. Wheelchairs may be borrowed from the entrances, but to ensure that you are not disappointed, we would advise you to telephone the museum on 08448 153139 to reserve a wheelchair in advance. Special parking for disabled drivers is available free of charge by the city entrance to the Museum.

Support dogs are admitted for blind and deaf people.

Lockers

Lockers are available within the museum. Cost: £1 per locker. Locker dimensions: 40cm deep, 24cm wide, 87cm tall.


Sound Guide

Sound Guide logo

Our Sound Guide brings to life the magic of the railways and takes you on a journey of discovery. 
You can hear how Mallard reached 126 miles an hour and broke the world record. Listen to the story of the dogs who collected for the poor by working on the railways and how third class passengers dined in luxury aboard the Midland Diner.
With over 60 stories to listen to you'll be enthralled, making your day out at the National Railway Museum a day to remember. You can pick up your sound guide at each entrance to the Museum.

Restaurant

Brief Encounter, our licensed restaurant, serves full meals and light snacks and is situated in the Station Hall. 

For lighter snacks, sandwiches, tea, coffee and soft drinks check-out The Signal Box Cafe in the Main Hall.

During the holiday season we have a Barbecue in the South Yard for more tasty treats.


Gift Shop

The Gift Shop sells souvenirs, videos, books and offers a mail order service. If you would like a copy of the Museum's Mail Order List (post free), please email your postal address to nrm.shop@nrm.org.uk

Corporate Hire

The Museum provides a unique setting for corporate hospitality, business meetings, private viewings, product launches, special celebrations and even weddings. Meeting facilities for 12 - 120 delegates, parties from 30 - 800.

The Education Team

The Education Department is one of the largest museum education departments in the country and provides a varied experience to approximately 50.000 learners every year! Whether you are looking for a learning opportunity to help deliver the National Curriculum, a day to celebrate the end of term or a visit with an ‘Out of School’ group the Education team can guarantee you that your group will have an inspiring, educational and enjoyable experience.

The Education team offer activities for young and old? From Early Years visitors enjoying pre-booked story sack sessions or dressing up as Victorian children to Secondary School pupils experimenting with magnets to investigate the Maglev train technology or finding out more about how the NRM operates by accessing our Leisure and Tourism website

The Education Team have put together information sheets in French, German and English on fourteen major exhibits - from Queen Victoria’s carriage to Stephenson’s Rocket which you can download from our Education Resources page.
