Visitor InformationAccess and FacilitiesCar ParkingFree parking spaces at the City Entrance in front of Station Hall are designated 'disabled driver only'. Free parking for blue badge holders is also available in the main visitor car park (tokens available from reception). AdmissionAdmission is FREE for all visitors except during certain special events when charges may apply. Support dogs welcome. FacilitiesFor a quick, convenient route from the city centre you can catch the Road Train straight to the Museum's door from Duncombe Place (next to York Minster). Currently running weekends from 3 Nov to 16 Dec. Our Christmas holiday service will run daily from 27 Dec to 6 Jan 2008. Trips leave the Museum on the hour and half hour from 11.00 to 16.00 and depart from Duncombe Place every 30mins from 11.15 to 16.15. This service is offered daily throughout the main holiday season. Wheelchairs are available free of charge at both entrances. Two battery powered wheelchairs are also available, to avoid disappointment we recommend you book in advance on 01904 686210 or 621261. Please note that these are not electric self-operating wheelchairs, you will need someone to operate the wheelchair for you. Lifts with audible floor indicators, audible warnings, and tactile control buttons provide access to exhibition galleries. Emergency exits use symbols to aid reading by the visually impaired. Auto doors, ramps, wide corridors and space around exhibits offer easy access. Wheelchair-accessible toilet facilities in all areas are equipped with handrails and emergency cords Sound guides are offered free of charge for visually impaired visitors. Instructions using tactile graphics are included. Public telephones are wheelchair-friendly and suitable for use by those who have impaired hearing. Large print boards at each entrance indicate where the main exhibits and facilities are located. Large plans of the Museum with symbols aid use by visually impaired visitors are produced following the RNIB's 'See it Right' clear print guidelines. ExhibitsMuseum exhibits are tactile and visitors are encouraged to touch and feel the items on display as far as conservation allows. Interpretative labels are produced following the RNIB's 'See It Right' guidelines. Some photographic exhibitions are accompanied by large print books. 17 June 2008 This popular annual event offers special access to the Museum and its collections for disabled visitors and those with special needs. Visitors will be able to enjoy train rides, simulator rides, cab access to the Chinese Locomotive, a turntable demonstration and signed theatre performances. There will also be an exciting range of activities including object handling, bell signalling, bridge building and brass rubbing. Please Touch is FREE and is open from 3pm-8pm. The events are open to visitors with disabilities and should be booked in advance.
