Volunteers at the National Railway Museum

There are around 250 volunteers at the NRM and they are involved in almost all of the Museum’s operations.

Day to day we have volunteers manning the Information Points and driving and guarding on the Miniature Railway in the south yard. Along with this, during the holidays, volunteers assist as guards with the standard guage train rides at the Museum.

We have a number of volunteers who assist with the work in Knowledge and Collections. There are several groups who are currently listing the engineering drawing collections from various railway companies and works. As the Museum’s ‘Search Engine’ project progresses this work will allow the public, enthusiasts and students greater access to the NRM’s priceless drawing collections.

But it is not all ‘clean’ work! Many of the volunteers are involved in projects, such as re-laying the Miniature Railway, and help with some of the more hands on work of looking after certain vehicles and provide practical assistance to the Museum. The Museum’s operational locomotives have their ‘support crew’ and a great number of these are volunteers too. They help to prepare the engine and ensure that all goes smoothly when a locomotive goes out on the line.

Along with all of these activities volunteers also help the Museum with many of its events. ‘Cab it ‘, the chance to get into the cabs of many of the locomotives here at the NRM, is almost entirely manned by volunteers and the Museum's main line services would simply not be the same if it weren’t for the small army of volunteers helping out as stewards on the train.

The volunteers really help to make a difference in the Museum. It is their hard work and enthusiasm that really adds to the enjoyment of a visit and their time, patience and commitment that helps to improve the Museum’s collections and activities.

By working alongside the staff the volunteers help make the Museum the exciting, interesting and enjoyable place that it is.

Any volunteer vacancies will be listed on these pages but at present the Museum is not recruiting for any volunteer opportunities.
