Summer fun with Mallard

The world record-holding loco returns to York for the summer holidays. Plus talks, steam rides, science shows and more.

The magnificent LNER class A4 locomotive 4468 Mallard is back at the National Railway Museum in York from 22 July. See this record-breaking locomotive on the turntable - and, from August, step onto its footplate.

Plus we're bursting with indoor and outdoor activities this summer. Entry is FREE and there's extended opening throughout the holidays: 9:30 - 18:00.

The record-breaking engine

Mallard holds the world speed record for steam traction on rail, travelling at 126 mph on 3 July 1938. She was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, who thought of the name 'Mallard' while feeding ducks at Salisbury Hall. She's now part of the National Collection - so you can get up close to this towering record-breaker.
