Jake was visiting a class of art students at Joseph Rowntree School entering York Theatre Royal & First TransPennine Express’ poster design competition. The competition, open to youngsters under 16 years of age, surrounds this summer holiday’s exciting new adaptation of well-loved children’s classic E Nesbit’s The Railway Children at the National Railway Museum (NRM).

Jake, who has been artist in residence at York Theatre Royal and has recently exhibited work in the theatre and across the UK is set to judge the competition, which has already had several hundred entries from across Yorkshire, later this week.

The 5 winning entrants will have their designs made into huge posters which will be displayed at York Theatre Royal, The National Railway Museum, and at various First TransPennine Express stations around the north of England.

“We’re so excited that families will not only be able to watch Mike Kenny’s exciting new adaptation of The Railway Children at the NRM, the home of the railway, but can also travel to see the performance by train, seeing our new posters along First TransPennine routes.”

Rose Lindsay Smith, festivals and events officer at the NRM, added:

“We hope The Railway Children will be a huge success and set the stage for many future theatrical ventures.”
