A spin around for African youngsters
Pupils and teachers from six African schools are sure to be in a spin about all things Yorkshire after a visit to York’s National Railway Museum (NRM)
A group of more than 100 students and teachers will be visiting York as part of a British Council Connecting Classrooms project where three UK schools are partnered with three schools in Abuja, Nigeria, and three schools in Cape Town, South Africa.
Youngsters are travelling to York courtesy of First Transpennine Express, where highlights of their day include a free-of-charge spin on the 60 m high Yorkshire Wheel, a taste of British transport history with a whistle-stop tour around the NRM, followed by a special reception with the Dean at York Minster.
The 48 African pupils accompanied by 13 teachers are staying at the Carlton Outdoor Education Centre, in Carleton-in-Cleveland Middlesbrough and are staying in the UK for a week. The visit to York is just one of the ‘wheelie’ exciting activities lined up for their stay.
Project Coordinator Simon Feasey from Caedmon Primary School, Middlesbrough said:
“Many of these children, those from the UK included, have not travelled by rail before so we are thrilled that they will experience modern train travel followed by a lesson in the rich history of our railways at the National Railway Museum. The visit to York’s historic Minster is just the icing on the cake! We are very grateful to the NRM and World Tourist Attractions, who own the wheel for making this visit possible.”
