Take your hat off to students brimming with ideas!

Heads will be turning this week at York Races when a Yorkshire Wheel millinery masterpiece is unveiled on Ladies Day (23 August).

In June a competition with a difference was launched for students at Leeds College of Art and Design. They were given the task of designing a stylish Yorkshire Wheel hat that could be modelled at York Racecourse’s August Ebor meeting.

A wide selection of creative designs were put forward, with Anna Taylor, of Strensall, York, being selected as the winner. Anna’s design shows the Yorkshire Wheel rising from a skyline silhouette of York.

As well as seeing her final creation modelled at Ladies Day at York Races by a professional model, Anna also won a ride on the Yorkshire Wheel followed by a meal for two at one of York’s most sophisticated bars & restaurants, The Living Room.

Sharon Bainbridge of Millinery By Design, who worked with students to create the hat, said:

“This challenge was a great experience for students with regards to working for real client. Anna’s design was challenging and interesting – the millinery department at the college hasn't created any wheel-based hats before!”

Anna Clark, Press Officer at the National Railway Museum, said:

“We are delighted with Anna’s Yorkshire Wheel hat design and are very grateful for all of the time and effort that was put into the project by everyone who took part. We are really looking forward to seeing people’s reactions to it on the day!”
