Press OfficeWheelie great time for guidesIt was time to “be prepared” at the National Railway Museum (NRM) last weekend when nearly 200 Brownies and Guides visited the Museum for a sleepover, raising over £200 for Children in Need. 27 units from York and surrounding areas including Tadcaster, Sherburn in Elmet and Barlby participated in the massive annual sleepover in the NRM’s Station Hall, along with 55 leaders. As well as counting railway carriages, rather than sheep to get some sleep, the girls, ranging from 7 - 14 years old, also enjoyed a fun-packed programme of activities including a ride on the 60 metre high Yorkshire Wheel.
Joyce Green, County Commissioner for Girlguiding in North Yorkshire South, said: “Everyone was really looking forward to the event this year, following the success of a similar sleepover in 2005. The programme of activities laid on by NRM staff was better than ever and included a Trackwise workshop and a ghostly gallery tour - the atmosphere here really can’t be beaten! We had over 40 units apply for places, so we could have filled Station Hall twice over.” Paul Swift, Lifelong Learning and Gallery Programmes Officer, at the NRM added: “The NRM’s Learning Department hold sleepover events for Guide and Scout groups throughout the year, with this being the final one for 2007. It’s a great way of getting kids to learn about all the amazing historical items we have in the National Collection, and hopefully we will see these youngsters back in the Museum with their families.” 19 November 2007 |
