National Railway Museum says... On yer bike!

Any old iron, any old iron…the National Railway Museum (NRM) is calling for people to pedal down to the NRM to donate unwanted bicycles, of any age, shape or form, ahead of a fantastic cycling event planned for the May Day Bank Holiday Weekend.

The ‘Cycle Tracks’ weekend, on the 5, 6 and 7 May, will offer a wide range of fabulous and fun events, including kinetic (moving) sculptures, a cycle workshop where visitors can have a go at developing their hands-on skills and an opportunity to try out all sorts of bikes, from practical to weird and wonderful!

On Saturday 5 May and Sunday 6 May, there will be spectacular demonstrations by highly skilled BMX riders who will be showing off their skills as well as exchanging tips with fellow BMX fans.

The Museum is appealing for people to bring in any unwanted bicycles and parts prior to the event, which will all be recycled. All unusable parts will be made into moving sculptures and those that are reusable will be recycled to create new bikes!

Cycle Tracks is a spectacular event being run in conjunction with the BikeRescue project, whose experts will be conducting the recycling and making the sculptures.

The new York-based BikeRescue Project aims to address the issue of the 60 bicycles that are thrown away each week in York. The not-for-profit organisation relies on the donations of old bikes, which are then recycled.

Jon Pridmore, Learning Developer for the NRM, said:

“Cycle Tracks is a great event that will not only highlight the value of recycling bikes, but also encourage people to come and take part in a wide range of fantastic activities. We’re also asking anyone who has any old unwanted bikes to bring them along to the Museum this Saturday (21 April) and next Saturday (28 April) to provide parts for bike recycling and sculpture making. It doesn’t matter what condition the bikes are in, as every single part will be recycled in some way!”
