Bring the family and dive into our world of mysteries, clues and science shows this summer at the National Railway Museum. We've lined up a wide range of fun activities which will put young minds to work, from writing stories in Case Files to learning about forces in our science shows alongside our exciting science busking demos. And if that's not enough to tempt you to visit, there's delicious food, exciting rides on the Miniature Railway and Mallard Experience and two vast spaces packed with stunning locomotives, carriages and other railway vehicles.

Case Files

Create a dramatic short story based on fact or fiction using the key elements of great crime writing. Step into the shoes of a detective to uncover the details of a crime, using clues, objects from our collection and a list of known suspects to help your reader decipher whodunnit.

Calling all budding storytellers: join in with the story and decide where our train travels to in our fun interactive storytelling session Imagination Station.

Think you can apprehend a criminal using just a description? Discover how the introduction of the railways created a need for facial recognition. Get your mug shot taken and added to our online gallery using #GoneRogue. 


Science shows

Witness exciting scientific experiments at one of our science shows. Our explosive Rocket to Bullet show explores the science behind railways, with experiments to find out how the Laws of Motion apply to trains. In our fast-paced Need for Speed show, find out how trains are able to travel so fast and which famous locomotives have broken speed records.


Science busking

Discover the science behind mysteries and crimes in our brand-new pop-up science busking shows. Find out about the trickery that thieves used to confound the police in the First Great Train Robbery.


The Missing Passenger

Station Hall | Free

Can you solve the mystery of the Dining Car murder? Find the clues to whittle down eight suspects and establish who killed theatre and film agent to the stars Edward Robey. Put your sleuthing skills to the test as you explore our new exhibition.


Shinkansen talk

10.30am and 3pm | Great Hall | Free

Our bullet train is the only example outside of Japan. Find out why even now this incredible engine is a symbol of progress and engineering excellence.


Turntable talk and demonstration

11am and 3.30pm | Great Hall | Free

Enjoy a short talk describing the Great Hall’s impressive turntable and its uses then watch it in action.


Miniature Railway

South Yard | Tickets £3 per person, £10 for a family of 4, under-2s free

Journey past gigantic railway objects and through the ever-changing landscapes of South Yard on board our miniature railway. Book your ticket online.


Mallard Experience

Great Hall | Tickets £4 per adult and £3 per child*

Don't miss out on our spectacular state-of-the-art 12-seater simulator ride located in Great Hall. Recreating Mallard's record-breaking run, this is the only place for you to experience the sights and sounds of the world's fastest steam locomotive - and you can now book online.
