From steam rides behind Flying Scotsman to storytelling, we’ve got lots of hands-on fun for the whole family this February half term. Join in with Flying Scotsman model making, take a ride on the Miniature Railway and find out all about speedy locomotives in our exciting Need for Speed science show.

Flying Scotsman steam rides

Tickets purchased on the day, not pre-bookable
£5, under-2s free

Journey back in time and experience what it was like to travel by steam train with a ride behind Flying Scotsman. Steam through South Yard taking in the sights, sounds and smells of steam power and wave to passengers on the Miniature Railway as you roll past. Don't forget to check out our Flying Scotsman range in the NRM Shop.

Under-12s must be accompanied by an adult.
Due to the design of the historic carriages that will be used, the steam rides will not be wheelchair accessible.

Victorian-style funfair

Daily, 10.30am-4.30pm | South Yard
Charges apply

Roll up, roll up! Come along and enjoy all the fun of the fair with traditional rides including a helter skelter and swing boats.

Parental supervision may be required on some rides.

Need for Speed science show

Daily, 12.30pm and 2.15pm | Learning Platform

How are we able to travel so fast on trains and which famous locomotives have broken incredible speed records? All this and more in our fast paced interactive family science show: Need for Speed.

Suitable for ages 6 and over.

Build your own Flying Scotsman

Daily, 10.30am-4.30pm | Station Hall

Build your very own model of Flying Scotsman and learn all about how this amazing locomotive works.

Suitable for ages 7 and over.

Meet & Greet – Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust

Daily, 11am-3pm | The Works Balcony

The locomotive Sir Nigel Gresley is currently undergoing a major overhaul in the Workshop. Named after its designer, the sister locomotive of Mallard holds the post-war speed record for steam traction of 112 mph. Come along to the Works Balcony to learn about what it takes to keep an 80-year-old steam locomotive fit for main line operation. To learn more about the restoration, take a look at the NRM Blog.

Imagination Station

Daily, 11.30am, 1.45pm and 3pm | Platform 6, Station Hall

Calling all budding storytellers! Join in with the story and decide where our train travels to in our fun interactive storytelling session "Imagination Station".

Suitable for under-6s.

York Miniature Railway

Daily, 10am-4pm | South Yard
Tickets £3 per person, £10 for a family of 4, under-2s free

Journey past gigantic railway objects and through the ever-changing landscapes of South Yard on board our miniature railway.

Turntable talk and demonstration

Daily, 11am, 12pm and 3.30pm | Great Hall

Enjoy a short talk describing the Great Hall’s impressive turntable and its uses then watch it in action.

Mallard Experience

Daily, 10am-4pm | Great Hall Tickets £4 per adult and £3 per child*

Don't miss out on our spectacular state-of-the-art 12-seater simulator ride located in Great Hall. Recreating Mallard's record-breaking run, this is the only place for you to experience the sights and sounds of the world's fastest steam locomotive.

Discover what lies under the skin of a steam locomotive as our Explainer unlocks its mysteries. Demonstrated on our sectioned locomotive, Ellerman Lines.

Station Hall, Great Hall and pop-up outlets

Pop along to our pop-up café at the promenade in Station Hall to grab a hot drink or head for the stall by the funfair where you will find family favourites. You can also take advantage of a special family offer at the Dining Car restaurant (open 10am-4pm) - two adults and two kids sandwiches, two hot drinks and two kids drinks for £19.95 or two adults main courses and two kids main courses, two hot drinks and two kids drinks for £25. Or at the Mallard Café (open 10am-4.30pm) you can get two hot sandwiches or two pizzas with salad, two kids bags and two hot drinks for £19.95.

Pop-up shop

Pick up an interesting gift for a loved one or treat yourself - we'll have a range of items for sale at our pop-up shop in Station Hall, including the special Flying Scotsman range and train toys for little ones.
