Railbus, 1958

Title: Railbus, 1958

Date: 1958-07-06

Place: Acrow, Essex, England

Description: Railbus at Acrow Halt, Essex, 16 July 1958. This halt was opened in 1957 for the workers at the Acrow company, near Saffron Walden. However, the line was closed in 1964 as British Railways cut services that were seen as unprofitable. The first railbuses were literally buses that had been converted for rail use. They developed into railcars which were carriages with the engine built into them. They were used on lines with small numbers of passengers and frequent stops.
