Restoration update - 15 February 2012

Date posted 15 Feb 2012

The restoration of Flying Scotsman is progressing well.

Recent work includes the installation of major frames components to include all the re-furbished six horn blocks and the new mid stretcher. We have completed successful repairs to the loco wheel sets, the six axle boxes and all associated components. The new middle motion brackets are fabricated and about to be installed. The fabrication of the new bogie stretcher is almost complete. Minor repairs and the final installation of running boards will be completed this week. Previously identified frames defects are 90% complete with all major riveting to frame components now completed. Many other components for the loco re-assembly have been completed in readiness for final installation.

The next key milestone in the project will be the refitting of the wheels expected to take place in mid March.

Over on the Railway Voices page of our main museum web site - a section dedicated to audio interviews with people from the railway industry - you can hear some extracts from a mid-2000 talk with Alan Pegler, who bought Flying Scotsman in the 1960s. There are some interesting insights about owning the famous loco, and taking it on tour to the US.
