This is an example of one of Bourne’s first sketches depicting navvies' work on the railways, such as putting up scaffolding and bricklaying. He has also drawn several images of horses either eating from a nosebag or pulling carts. Bourne’s attention to these details, highlights his interest in the new technologies used to construct the railway and the people who used them.
