1968 themes
In August 1968 an excursion train made its way over the Pennines from Liverpool to Carlisle and back again. It was the official farewell to main line steam. With steam banished, British Rail finally emerged from an antiquated British Railways. As you explore each locomotive, its story will give a unique insight into the time of change that was 1968 and all that.
Four big stories will be told through some classic locomotives:
- The End of the Line - locomotives that brought the steam age to a close.
- The New World - the diesel and electric locomotives that modernised Britain’s railways.
- The Survivors - the story of the post ‘68 steam survivors.
- The Future - the 1960s represented a time of change, but how is today’s railway adapting to our transport needs?
