1968 and all that
24 May - 1 June 2008
1968 and all that was a real success with around 10,000 people coming through the doors to ride on the locomotives, visit the open cabs, buy items from the stalls and sample the award winning York Brewery Ales.
Enthusiasts and families enjoyed the free train rides on a selection of locomotives (steam and diesel) and got the chance to see a collection of locomotives that had never before been seen together. The recently restored Oliver Cromwell was shown off to great effect next to both Evening Star and King George V- a combination that kept the photographers very busy.
It was not all locomotives though. The heavy horses were a great hit with the children and visitors of all ages found things to tempt them at the many stalls. Some visitors, after a good look around made use of the on-site bar and enjoyed a pint of some of Yorkshires finest real ales.
Over 100 volunteers from the National Railway Museum and many other organisations worked tirelessly along side staff from the Museum to make sure that this event went smoothly and feedback from the visitors showed that it made a difference. Comments were overwhelmingly positive about both the event and the accompanying book. The Museum would like to say thank you to all who visited or helped at this event and went to make it the success that it was.
