Western Fusilier

Western Fusilier

The "Westerns" as they were always referred to were introduced into general service between December 1961 and December 1963. The order for the fleet of 74 was split between BR Swindon and Crewe. Their Voith hydraulic drive made them unusual machines.

They were extremely reliable and worked the routes between Paddington, Swansea and the West of England. Despite their performance they were scheduled for withdrawal under the BR rationalisation in 1973. However such was their tenacity that the last engine was withdrawn in 1977.

Enthusiasm for this class has meant that approximately 7 are preserved across the country. D1023, as a result of many man-hours by volunteers has become operational again and has been touring the country attending various events.
