Locomotives - 84001

Bo-Bo Class 84001 (E3036) (25KV overhead)

The main line electrification of BR between London, Manchester and Liverpool led to the development of the AC electrics. Ten 84's were built between 1960/61. An early AC development, they were dogged by mechanical problems which BR were unable to resolve and in 1967 nine of the fleet were mothballed along with the Class 83's. Reprieve came with the completion of the West Coast Main Line when it was found to be easier to refurbish the class rather than build from new.

The 84's however retained their popularity, even after their demise, through enthusiast charters in the 1980s. The novelty value of riding behind such a rare electric locomotive encouraged enthusiasts as these engines were seldom seen on the main line because of their reliability problems.

84001 is currently on loan to the AC Locomotive Group at Barrow Hill and is undergoing restoration.
