Directories

The National Register of Archives will tell you what records a particular organisation holds.
Access to Archives will provide you with the catalogues of collections held at different archive centres, so you can check before visiting that the information you are after actually exists.
Local public libraries and archive centres can be a rich source of information if your interest is more localised in scope. The National Archives ARCHON directory.
Search Engine staff have created a directory of useful websites for researching railways on social bookmarking site Delicious.
