Timetables

We have an extensive collection of timetables from 1839 up to the present day.

This collection includes the famous Bradshaw railway guide (as referred to in Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie novels). It also includes the timetables that the railway companies produced for their passengers and staff, called Working Timetables: these provide a real picture of how the railways ran, which can differ from the information given to the public.

We also have what are termed Appendices to the Working Timetables. These items provide a useful insight on the procedures used by staff to run the railways.

Timetables in our collection

These PDF files list the timetables we have in our collections. They may not be complete. If you are having trouble opening them, try right-clicking and saving the document to your computer (and making sure the file is named '.pdf' at the end).

If you'd like to access something from our archives, see Search Engine. To order a copy of a drawing, see our copying service page.

The Bradshaw’s timetables are also on the Library Catalogue.
