Churchill's Final Journey
Mark 50 years since a people's farewell with our display of the train that took the statesman on his solemn last journey. The locomotive and baggage van is remaining on public display in Great Hall this summer.
- 30 Jan 2015 - 31 May 2015
- Adults, Suitable for all ages
Churchill's funeral on 30 January 1965 was a historic event. While it was a significant state occasion, it was also an opportunity for ordinary people to pay their own personal respects. The funeral was watched on television by millions throughout the world, while thousands lined the trackside to watch as the train passed.
We will be displaying our locomotive, Winston Churchill, to mark the 50th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s state funeral. Visitors will be able to see the locomotive for the first time since its cosmetic restoration at Mid-Hants Railway. It will be displayed alongside the baggage van which carried Churchill's coffin. This will be the first time since the funeral that these two vehicles have been seen together.
The funeral signified the end of an era. Not only did it mark the passing of a historic figure, but it would also be the last time that a steam locomotive would be involved in a state funeral.
Were you there?
We are looking for personal recollections and photographs to share with our visitors. We would like to hear from anyone who saw the train on its journey from Waterloo to its final stop at Handborough. We would also like to hear from anyone who may have worked on the funeral train.
You can send us your story by emailing email@example.com.
By submitting material you are agreeing that it may be used for the Churchill's Final Journey display and in any associated promotional activities. We will credit all photographs where possible.
We would like to thank everyone who has made a donation towards making our commemorative display of Sir Winston Churchill's funeral train a reality. In particular, we would like to thank the Friends of the National Railway Museum for their significant support in the restoration of the locomotive and the funeral car.
