For over 100 years, the Signalling School Model Railway has been used to put would be railway signallers through their paces. It uses authentic period signalling instruments to show how trains negotiate round the rail network safely. It is the only one of its kind and it's still used by Network Rail.

Demonstration dates

The final demonstration of 2014 is on 29 December and will be a special session, recreating a real rail crash.

At 2.00 pm, jump back in time to to 15th August 1953 and the smoky atmosphere of Irk Valley Junction. Having set the scene, expert volunteers will use the model railway to explain how a combination of casual rule breaking and failures in concentration lead to death and destruction in a Manchester suburb.
