On special event days, you can enjoy a ride on our steam train (a small charge applies), run by the Merlin Locomotive Group.

Our currently operating locomotive is Furness Railway No. 20, the oldest working standard gauge steam locomotive in the UK. Built in 1863, FR No. 20 is a remarkable survivor from a bygone era.

Footplate rides are also available on all passenger steaming days (except our gala events) for £10 per person – participants must be aged 18 or over.

The steam train service is subject to availability of the locomotive: call us on 01388 777999 before your visit to check that the service is running.

The Merlin Locomotive Group

The Merlin Group are a small group of dedicated volunteers who willingly give up their spare time to ensure that the Merlin locomotive is maintained and operated for the enjoyment and education of all visitors to Locomotion. Merlin, built in Bristol in 1939, was in service at various sites for 32 years. It was originally named Eberle (or Eberley), but was renamed after being restored for the Gwili Railway near Camarthen. It was purchased in 1997 for use as a working educational exhibit at Locomotion.
