Volunteer at York
Thanks to our volunteers we are able to provide our visitors with a fantastic day out and a chance to enjoy one of the finest railway collections in the world. Why not join us?
"I love to meet people, find them the books they need and talk about railways, especially if it helps them with their search for knowledge."
"I enjoy the friendship of my fellows, and interplay with our visitors, who are often, themselves, unwitting mines of information. Rarely a week goes by when I get back less than I give out."
"The best feeling comes from knowing that, at the end of each operating session, we have increased the enjoyment of a day out for many of our visitors."
"... it's about passing on to people that the story of Britain's Railways is not only late, overcrowded and overpriced train journeys but the story of rich heritage, world beating and innovative engineering, self sacrifice and technological advancement."
"It is a most stimulating place to work as you never know who will turn up or what sort of questions or information they will be asking or looking for. "
What's in it for you?
People volunteer with us for a whole host of different reasons:
- To gain unique, museum-based work experience
- To enhance their CV
- To develop their skills
- To try out some new roles
- To meet people
- To have fun!
We appreciate that some people are able to donate more of their time than others, but whether it's half a day each month or one day a week, we can usually find something that works for you.
If you are enthusiastic and willing to get stuck in, get a buzz from helping our visitors or working with the collection or have a passion for people or history get in touch. A railway or museum background is by no means essential.
