Travelling to the Museum

The Museum is 540 metres (600 yards) from York railway station. Visitors travelling by train can now access the Museum via a footbridge from the railway station to the Museum’s City Entrance. However, this is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Alternatively, the Museum is signposted from the city centre and from York’s ring road for those travelling by car or coach.

There is free parking for school coaches but spaces must be booked in advance.

Risk assessment

The Learning team are committed to providing as safe and healthy an environment for our audiences as is reasonably practical. To this end, we risk assess all our events and activities.

Our guidelines are designed to assist teachers/group leaders when completing their own risk assessment during a preliminary visit to the site. The document lists areas at the National Railway Museum that may be visited and raises awareness of the possible risks. Please remember that a risk assessment document is only valid if completed by the teacher/group leader.

Teachers/group leaders can minimise the risk to themselves and their group when visiting the NRM by paying attention to the following guidelines:

• Group leaders are responsible for their group’s safety and behaviour whilst they are in the museum, and must ensure that their group is supervised at all times 
• Provide a sufficient number of adult supervisors for the age and ability of your children. NRM recommended ratios are:
  Early Years – 1:4
  Primary – 1:8
  Secondary – 1:10
• Be aware of changes in the weather and how this may affect your environment, in particular surfaces
• Should an accident occur, group leaders are requested to contact a member of staff as soon as possible
