Timothy Hackworth was born at Wylam near Newcastle in 1786. He trained as a colliery blacksmith under his father. When he was 22 he began work on the new steam locomotives that were being introduced at Wylam.
Timothy and his wife were both heavily involved with the local Wesleyan chapel, where Timothy was a preacher. A great deal of his wife’s time would have been taken up with the supervising of the cooking and cleaning – for a family of seven children.
Come along and experience what life would have been like for the Hackworths.
Education workshops may be booked throughout the year. Please call the Education Officer for details of times on 01388 771444.
All groups must pre-book their visit to Locomotion.
