The National Railway Museum is committed to achieving the highest standards of excellence.
Our hard work has been recognised by winning over 20 prestigious awards since 1975. Our most recent award wins are:
White Rose Awards 2010
Business Tourism Award
In October 2010, the Events team scooped the top prize in the Business Tourism category of the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards. We now proceed to the national Enjoy England awards, held in April 2011.
White Rose Awards 2009
We were delighted to win two prestigious White Rose Awards for tourism – the fifth time in our history that we have won this coveted award.
Best Visitor Attraction
The judges commented upon our commitment to customer service and constant innovation delivering new events and exhibitions.
Best Tourism Experience
This award was received jointly with York Theatre Royal for the production of The Railway Children, staged on a real railway track at the Museum, during Summer 2009.
TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2012
In 2012 we were awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for achieving exceptional visitor ratings. We are also ranked the No. 1 attraction in York.
World Class Service
We are proud to have been awarded World Class Service accreditation in 2009, 2010 and 2011. World Class Service is an employer-led initiative dedicated to helping leisure sector organisations to deliver outstanding customer service. The accreditation is based on a detailed set of service standards that look at the museum’s service environment and the service provided by its staff.
The National Railway Museum, along with the three other museums in the National Museum of Science and Industry (NMSI) group, are the first national museums to have received this accreditation.
York Tourism Awards
Conference Venue Of The Year
In April 2010, we were named Conference Venue Of The Year at the York Tourism Awards, held by Visit York to recognise excellence within York's tourism industry. The NRM will now be entered into the same category at Welcome To Yorkshire’s White Rose Awards For Tourism 2010.
Oustanding Customer Service - Highly Commended
Sue Towler of Visitor Experience received the Highly Commended accolade in the Outstanding Customer Service category.
Rough Guide To Accessible Britain Awards
In March 2010, the NRM at Shildon was named Best Free Venue in the UK at the first ever Rough Guide To Accessible Britain Awards. The awards, supported by Motability, reward the efforts made by attractions across the country to ensure that visitors with disabilities enjoy an inclusive, inspiring and accessible experience.
Model Of The Year
Two of the Bachmann-produced models on sale exclusively at the NRM won prizes at the Model Of The Year awards 2009, chosen by the readers of Model Rail magazine, RMweb and the Model Railway Express website. The GWR 4-4-0 No. 3440 City of Truro model (on sale now) won Model Of The Year, and the NRM special edition Deltic prototype model won Model Of The Decade.
