New arrival at Locomotion: No. 3850 Juno
01 Nov 2010
Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon is pleased to welcome a new arrival – Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST No. 3850 Juno.
There were 484 locomotives built to this design, and around 70 still survive. However, Juno is the last untouched and original example, having only worked for 11 years before retirement.
Built by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds in 1958 for Stewarts and Lloyds, Rutland, Juno was put to work in the company’s ironstone quarries railway system.
Declared redundant in 1968, Juno was purchased in 1969 by the Ivatt Locomotive Trust, and moved to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre at Quainton Road. There Juno proved to be a valuable asset and was often seen hauling trains at the centre.
Having been out of service for many years, the Ivatt Locomotive Trust generously transferred ownership of Juno to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. The locomotive has been at Havenstreet on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway since May 2009.
The locomotive is now on display in the Collection Building, and will be conserved in the museum’s Conservation Workshop in due course.
